Whether this is the first bike ride or the first ride on a new bike, please make the experience a great one.
Take the extra effort to go to a fun place that your child and you will really love and remember. A small flat park near a coffee shop with ice creams is ideal! Yes, I am saying a little bribing for you and them won't hurt.
Knowing what speed your bike will balance at is only learnt from experience. Balance speed is the slowest point where the bike will stay upright under riding without training wheels conditions. This point is so important to learn because it helps break the training wheel syndrome.
Training wheels are great for learning the unnatural skill of pedalling. At the same time training wheels can be detrimental in learning to balance. By creating the assisted balance, training wheels also create an artificial understanding of balance speed. They can also mislead the rider by simply reducing the effort it takes to ride a bicycle.
Almost every parent I have come across likes the idea of buying a bike that their kids will grow into. Of course this makes sense financially, but there are negatives.
The negatives of a bigger bike are that the extra size, height and weight are quite daunting, and often a child can't actually properly ride the bike or safely control it. Where's the fun in that?
